It takes a minimum of 12 hours to drive it. No, it's not close. The area where the CO is having this swarm often has quakes, usually rather small ones, but here is an interesting list of 4&5 pointers.
"Earthquake activity:
Cokedale-area historical earthquake activity is significantly above Colorado state average. If a man wants to "become a woman", or vice-versa, Trinidad is still the place. One newscaster who experienced it was even talking about the earthquake excitedly like something cool had happened. It will be nothing more than one of many topics on facebook, twitter posts and water coolers around America. I know this is an understatement but the world is going to get blindsided by the coming time of Judgement.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2736720231951988221.post-32820039299734708762011-08-23T16:37:59.028-04:002011-08-23T16:37:59.028-04:00Hi Lydia,

Check out these maps from the USGS - earthquakes are quite common from the Front Range (Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo) west to the Utah border. Several earthquakes have happened this year. I check the earthquake page EVERY day, have for several years, and believe me, I notice when Colorado comes up on the list! Also Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. It's been a busy year for those 4 states so far this year!

http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_c0005igu_h.html (this is just the area where they are happening today)

http://www.cdphe.state.co.us/hm/rad/rml/energyfuels/preap/07docs/07earthquake.pdf (very interesting map, detailing known earthquakes 3.9 - 5.5 from 1960-2006 and known fault lines in Colorado, plus possible sites of historic quakes)

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/regional/imw/imw_rito_seco/ (this one is about the Sangre de Cristo fault line, which is 300 km long. Check out where the quakes in Chihuahua, Mexico (there was another one just last week http://www.quaketracker.com/magnitude-3-2-earthquake-chihuahua-mexico-2/ ) have been happening, draw a line north and voila!, you run into the Sangre de Crist fault line. Some scientists think that the Rio Grande River valley is a rift valley forming. The Rio Grande begins in Colorado, altho not in the Sangre de Cristo mountains (blood of Christ mountains) which are just north and east of the Rio Grande.
http://cires.colorado.edu/science/groups/sheehan/projects/riogrande/faq/ .)
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/states/colorado/seismicity.php (this one shows all of the quakes from 1990-2006 - note that there are a few quakes in the eastern part of the state, too. On my computer, the circle colors almost match exactly the background map, so look carefully - there are dozens!)

Colorado also has quite a volcanic history, much of which happened in an area not far from where today's quakes are happening (New Mexico also had volcanic activity in that area.)
The geology of Colorado is quite interesting (gold rush, siver mining, Garden of the Gods, Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP, Great Sand Dunes NP and so much, much more!) - plus lots to learn about in the rest of the Western half of the US.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
