It is absolutely astounding to think that the Lord Jesus might actually come back in my lifetime - this event that brothers and sisters have been looking for for 2000 years - and to be able to actually see how future events, things that seemed so fantastic just a few years ago, might play out is really, really incredible. Even so, come Lord Jesus! As my father says, I'm not looking for the undertaker, I'm looking for the uppertaker. :DGrace to Youhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02762614330823622639noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2736720231951988221.post-83297290820369917142014-08-10T15:22:16.732-04:002014-08-10T15:22:16.732-04:00Hi Laurie,
Well in your distaste for tattoos, you...Hi Laurie,

Well in your distaste for tattoos, you're in good company. God said in Leviticus 19:28, "..... Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. ... "

In that day, grieving pagans would cut themselves, and body modification was rampant, such as tattoos. The command not to get one was specifically to the Israelites at that time, so the world would see that Israel was a distinct people of Yahweh, apart from the world.

Since the Levitical law is fulfilled, does it apply to today's Christian? Not specifically, but the spirit is the same. In the New Testament we're called to be a holy people called out from the world. A Christian who is already saved should probably not indulge in such things, because the world is so full of this kind of behavior and we want to stand apart.

However, if a person already has a tattoo and then they are saved, Jesus certainly looks at the inside of a person, not the outside. So no worries there! If a young person chooses to get a tattoo after he is saved, since it is not prohibited or commanded, it falls in the gray area of Christian liberty, a personal decision.

If an elder who is saved decides to get one, a case could be made that it is unwise since elders are supposed to be a model for the younger and the elders are not supposed to put a stumbling block in front of them. That's why many elders choose to refrain from alcohol, it is not prohibited in the New Testament - but being drunk is. Even though an older person may have the self-control to drink a glass of something but not overindulge to get drunk, a younger person probably won't have that self-control. In order to model holy behavior, many men and women refrain so as to be an example and not cause another to stumble. Tattoos would be the same.

I'm not a fan of body modification (although I could stand to modify my body by losing some weight, lol). This includes elective plastic surgery that has no medical basis or necessity. My opinion, it's the same as tattoos.Elizabeth Pratahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04341086233512507156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2736720231951988221.post-11870978423384496982014-08-10T15:00:13.166-04:002014-08-10T15:00:13.166-04:00I despise tattoos. Don't ask me why I have such a revulsion to them, but I've always found them distasteful. As you say, why would people "defile" their bodies with tattoos for any reason whatsoever?
LaurieAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2736720231951988221.post-62661765027298802862014-08-10T10:53:40.804-04:002014-08-10T10:53:40.804-04:00I'm amazed that technology is being invented b...I'm amazed that technology is being invented because people don't want to take 2.3 seconds to unlock their phone, an accessory that is supposed to help us. Is there anything more clear that we have become slaves to technology rather than the other way around? that people would defile their bodies with tattoos in order to be 2.3 seconds lazier?Elizabeth Pratahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04341086233512507156noreply@blogger.com
