Everything in the middle... that was good, too. :)

For part 2, disagreements quite often come because people are following something other than the written word of God. All false doctrine has its origin in another source than God. Scripture says there are two sources of false teaching: first, the vain traditions/teachings/doctrines of man (e.g.: Matthew 15:9; Col 2:2, 2:8), and second, the doctrines of demons (e.g.: 1 Tim 4:1). I'm not sure how I'd classify this in Herrick's 3 reasons from part 2 (sin, ignorance, clash of worldview), because it might be a little bit of all three...

Part 3, good points on proper discourse. There is a time to be gentle and a time to be tough, but both must be done properly. As you said, there is no simple rubric, but we do have the Spirit, if we are Christ's. Frankly, we all lack from time to time; we do, after all, have the flesh with which to contend. No one is going to be perfect except Christ. But we can grow in wisdom.

Anyhow, one more thought we've found helpful: there is a time to disengage. Just like Ecclesiastes says, there is a time to speak and a time to be silent. In the face of unteachable spirits, further discourse is casting pearls.

-Carolyn Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
