It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. Proverbs 25:2
A beautiful symmetry can be seen in evidence throughout nature. This symmetry is replicated in art and architecture as well and is known as the Golden Ratio. God's numerical calling card seems to be the Golden Ratio, His special number, 1.618. This number is known as Phi, or Divine Proportion. The following are some examples of natural things and designed things which adhere to the Divine Proportion:
However, scientists have never before found the golden ratio in evidence at the subatomic level. This week, there is wonderful news from the scientific world of quantum mechanics!
Symmetry found hidden in supercold atoms
Science News reports: "A beautiful math emerges from the acrobatic flips of supercold atoms in a magnetic field, researchers report in the Jan. 8 Science. Scientists detected an elusive, complex symmetry known as the E8 Lie group in resonating particles, a symmetry long analyzed on paper but never seen in a physical system. The work suggests that this numerical grace may be hidden in other physical systems and may provide a mathematical link between quantum processes in condensed matter and the physics of the cosmos."
"numerical grace"...
" "Bound by the externally applied magnetic field and the slight magnetic field that exists between chains, the quasiparticles start resonating at mathematically intriguing frequencies. Two of the frequencies occur in the ratio of the golden mean, the influential and aesthetically pleasing ratio of 1.618 often used in art and architecture", says Tennant."
"Golden ratio..."
"It is quite remarkable to see a material in the lab behaving with such perfection,” says Tennant. Perhaps this veiled symmetry will also emerge in other physical systems and shed light on bigger questions, he says."
"Perfection...in veiled symmetry"
We can end with the same scripture we began with. It has long been known that there existed a symmetry in nature that seems unexplainable, mysterious, yet present. But it now has been discovered by scientists who searched for it at the sub-atomic level. "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. Proverbs 25:2" Do these 'kings' see the glory of God in the world they dubbed as having numerical grace, Divine proportion, and veiled symmetry? Will this lead to a search for answers of the bigger questions? For some, perhaps. I hope it does. For others, no: "To a certain degree, the story of modern physics is a story of symmetry,” says Konik. “But I wouldn’t say this is going to tell us more about the fundamental nature of the universe.”
Well, I would. I would indeed. And give God the glory because He said, "It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it. I stretched out the heavens with My hands, And I marshaled their starry hosts." Is 45:12. And it was good.
