Do you ladies see the internal inconsistency in this? You "can't catch the Spirit & make stay Him put" but you CAN catch Him & control Him. On the surface, false teachers' doctrine always sounds Christian-y, but upon digging only slightly deeper, it falls apart. That's because it's cotton candy, all clouds and no water. (Jude 1:12).
Ladies, dig deeper. Don't accept what teachers say at face value. Examine the Scriptures to see if these things are so. (Acts 17:11). In this particular case, John 3:8 would apply here-
"The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
The Bible Knowledge Commentary says of John 3:8,
"This verse contains a wordplay which cannot be adequately expressed in English. The Greek word pneuma means both wind and Spirit. The work of the Spirit (pneuma) is invisible and mysterious like the blowing of the wind (pneuma). Man controls neither."What is really sad to me is how many people retweeted it and 'liked' it within just a couple of hours of Moore having published the tweet. The bane of Twitter. Correct theology takes time and care to explain, exceeding Twitter's 140 characters. But wrong theology can fit neatly into a 140 character limit, and they propagate like the weeds they are.

I think she wrote that He cannot be controlled or managed because then He's quenched? It's confusing language, anyway. And those of us who are more familiar with scripture long to hear teachers use biblical language.
ReplyDeleteThe Holy Spirit is grieved when we sin, not when we control him. I agree... I also long for teachers who are familiar with scripture.
DeleteThat is such a stupid statement, I just cannot even.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the arrogance of implying that He could be "managed". As if.

Fromgotquestions.org: When the word “quench” is used in Scripture, it is speaking of suppressing fire. When believers put on the shield of faith, as part of their armor of God (Ephesians 6:16), they are extinguishing the power of the fiery darts from Satan. Christ described hell as a place where the fire would not be “quenched” (Mark 9:44, 46, 48). Likewise, the Holy Spirit is a fire dwelling in each believer. He wants to express Himself in our actions and attitudes. When believers do not allow the Spirit to be seen in our actions, when we do what we know is wrong, we suppress or quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19). We do not allow the Spirit to reveal Himself the way that He wants to.
ReplyDeleteA person filled with the Holy Spirit can quench it. But they can't control it. If you continue to quench, He will move on and you will be controlled by sin.
Bottom line: Given the bible illiteracy that prevails among the church today, Bible Teachers need to stop with the useless and non-sensical phrases and hashtags and explain what the word of God really says. The word of God is amazing, full of wisdom, awe inspiring and beautiful all on its own! Not to mention the grief it will save many from if they just knew what it really says.
manuela227, does the Holy Spirit ever leave a believer? "Move on?"
ReplyDeleteNo. The Holy Spirit does not leave the believer in whom He is sealed. Ephesians 1:13, 2 Corinthians 1:22.
DeleteThis is the incessant misuse of God's word as some kinda "cute" cliche'in a glibly manor. This is a textbook example of how exegesis is NOT to be done-EVER! This is how abysmal and shallow our theology has become. It's just pure LAZINESS. Sorry for the capitalization, but I'm stressing my frustration. People are being deceived by someone namely Beth Moore who is skilled in nothing more than persuasion and flimflam
ReplyDeleteMy other disagreement and I could be very wrong since I don't know her mind, is Beth Moore possibly tacitly implying to convey that those trouble-making Christians who don't believe in extra-biblical voices outside of God's word[who stay within the confines of Scripture are somehow the ones who are holding him down? - "catch the Spirit & make stay Him put"? "Where He's carefully managed and coolly controlled, He's quenched???
Good point, I agree on the 'nullifying criticism' front.
DeleteHow SAD it is that we make so much of ourselves (as IF we have any say or part in the Holy Spirit's power - he's the Creator and resurrection power!!!) and so little of God.
I don't tweet, but I understand space is limited on a tweet? Anyway, I don't think she really means the Spirit can actually be controlled. It's just a misuse of words to mean if we manage ourselves in our own way - with the intent on managing Him and controlling Him because we don't want to obey Him - and that we listen to our own will instead of the leading of the Spirit, then we are quenching His leading in us and, after a while, will no longer be able to hear His voice. You all are being too critical.
