Jesus said "There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves," (Luke 21:25). The Dictionary of the Bible says that signs are "remarkable events which witness to the will of God, such as the rainbow (Gen. 9: 12) or the plagues wrought by Moses and Aaron in Egypt (Exod. 10: 2). In the NT the Jews demanded miraculous signs from Jesus (Matt. 12: 38), which he refused. In John's gospel the miracles are called signs (semeia in Greek) which are intended to produce faith (John 20: 30–1). Jesus would therefore be accepted as the one who performs the works of God, which are the eschatological acts of salvation (John 5: 20–3)."
I do not know what 'signs in the sun' would be. But I do know that remarkable events are occurring that haven't occurred before. On January 4, 2010, amateur astronomer Alan Watson saw a comet inside our near solar system, heading straight for the sun. To me the interesting thing about this discovery is that though there are a billion dollars' worth of telescopes and helioscopes aimed at every quadrant of the visible universe, the comet escaped everyone's attention until it was practically on our backyard. Where did the comet come from? No one knows. It was unnamed, then named after the amateur astronomer who found it. The comet streaked toward the sun for several days then was gobbled by the sun's might.
Phew, that was a close one. Good thing THAT doesn't happen very often. Astronomers believe that this comet was part of the Kreutz Sungrazers cluster. These are fragments of one larger comet that broke apart centuries ago. Occasionally a fragment appears and plunges near the sun, sometimes to be swallowed, sometimes to escape. The last near-sun fragment appeared in 1965. Until January 4. Again, good thing THAT doesn't happen very often.
Until January 21, that is. Again, a sudden appearance of what is likely (?) a Kreutz Sungrazer streaked toward the sun. It came from the same direction as the one a week ago. This is the second comet in near earth neighborhood and the second one to take astronomers by surprise.
Mini-asteroid sneaks up on Earth"
These two comets are not the only strange things giving astronomers sleepless nights. In the far reaches of the universe, over in the asteroid belt is a mystery object scientists cannot explain. One article titled "Mystery Object Behaves Both Like a Comet and Asteroid" states: "Something awfully curious is happening 250 million miles away in the asteroid belt. Astronomers think they may be witnessing a never-before-seen collision between two asteroids. The puzzle centers on a newly discovered object that superficially looks like a comet but lives among the asteroids."
I do not know if these are some of THE signs, but I do note that the scientists say they are unprecedented, never before seen, interesting and unusual. When there are a series of never before seen things happening in the cosmos, and knowing Jesus said there would be signs in the sun/moon/stars, I do sit up and say, "Come soon, Jesus!"
