Conduct unbecoming Christians

This is a re-post of the essay I wrote three weeks ago on the proposed Quran/Koran burning in Florida by Dove Outreach Center. My sentiments have not changed. The issue is getting worldwide attention now, so here is the re-post:

"Florida authorities have forbidden a church in Gainesville to burn the Quran on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. If the church burns the Qur'ans it would suffer a financial penalty. This is due to the municipal law in Gainesville, which prohibits the burning of books in public. However, the church has announced that it plans to burn the books on September 11 in any case."

The church is non-denominational, and their Facebook page has a statement of intent on this day that call "International Burn A Koran Day:" "On September 11th, 2010, from 6pm - 9pm, we will burn the Koran on the property of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, FL in remembrance of the fallen victims of 9/11 and to stand against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!" They say their mission is "To bring to awareness to the dangers of Islam and that the Koran is leading people to hell. Eternal fire is the only destination the Koran can lead people to so we want to put the Koran in it's place - the fire!"

How un-Christian can you get. How misguided can you be.

Though it is true that Islam is of the devil, so are all religions that do not acknowledge that Jesus is the one and only path to salvation. The Koran is not leading others to hell, satan is. Islam is not the enemy, satan is. Focusing on the symptom and not the cause is a mistake, and attacking it is worse. We are not to attack, but to resist. We are not to burn and hate, but to love. There is nothing that we as Christians can do that will be worse than the unbeliever's eternal torment, but engaging in hateful and negative behaviors this side of judgment is only a confirmation of the unbeliever's suspicion that Christians, under "their God," are intolerant.

When unbelievers use the word intolerant, they usually mean "unforgiving." Forgiveness is what marks the Christian from the rest of the intolerant world, because at the root of forgiveness is love. Who can forget the Amish extension of forgiveness to the murderer of their children and the family of the murderer? In 2006, a suicidal killer rounded up girls aged 6 to 13 inside their school, bound them, laid them down, and massacred them execution style. Several of the parents of the slain girls and others went to the father of the killer, and consoled him. The sobbing father of the killer took one hour to be consoled, but in his grief and shame the love of Jesus shined through the arms holding him. When the Amish instead urged all to forgive, it was a remarkable display of Christian love that reverberates to this day. Satan, that old enemy, had gotten inside the killer's head and influenced him to do a heinous thing, but the Amish response to this terrible event was love, not hate.

If the Amish had responded with pickets, or burnings, or clenched fists waving angrily, the reverberations for the Kingdom of God would not resound in His courts, but instead, be resounding in the hellfire that satan dwells in. Burning Korans is a senseless and pointless activity that only widens the gap between souls needing salvation and souls who should know better.

Muslims are not our enemy. Satan is our enemy. Muslims are simply lost souls waiting to be harvested. Our love and forgiveness could be the seed that the Holy Spirit grows into wheat, and not chaff destined for the fire.

Note the two images on this blog entry, the book burning far above and the prayer circle just above. Our children are watching you, Dove World Outreach Center. What image do you wish to be indelibly imprinted on their minds? One of forgiveness, or one of hate?

  1. Hi Elizabeth:

I was wondering if you were keeping abreast of this again. I should know you were, ha ha. But seriously, I think I mentioned the last time that I really think this is a plan from the enemy...as you see how all faiths are coming together publically to discredit this man and what he is doing, which I also completely disagree with. I just find it funny how this little old guy from nowhere with a little church is stirring up so much trouble with this that it is causing even the Vatican to get involved. Come on, you can't tell me Satan doesn't have his hand in this to help promote this "Ecumenical" and even political (as the military and even the President have commented on it) are coming together against this "religious and racially" insensitive pastor. As I said, I completely disagree with him and what he is doing, but isn't too convenient that this is happening now with the World Trade Center Mosque situation, etc. There is definately a double standard as well, because if Muslims burn our books, flags, people, etc. it is just a fringe group...but if a American does the same type of act upon their holy items or ideas or people, it is of the utmost wrong. And again, isn't just convenient for the enemy that it is a "Christian pastor" that is doing this. Good way to mark us all for the Fema camps, huh? ha ha. But that may be more serious than we think as well. I'm still looking up, I think the One who is True will be here soon to deliver us. Amen!

  2. I agree wholeheartedly about the double standard. I disagree with what Obama did: sending FBI to the guy to intimidate him. I also agree with you about the Lord returning soon. Oh, Lord, deliver us!

  3. I also think this is a pre-cursor to the persecution and martyrdom of followers of Christ. It's all getting set up.

  4. Thanks for the repost Elizaeth, missed it the first time.
Around the "watercooler", people have asked my opinion about the burning since they all know I am a Christian.
I just simply say; "What would Jesus do?"
The problems are caused by self proclaimed, well meaning, "Christians" not by Christ.
I agree, the FBI visit was the most disturbing to me. All it takes is a few religious radicals or cults to create instability for laws to be created to combat "percieved" radicalism. Remember we have already witnessed Jim Jones, Branch Davidians, Heaven's Gate, etc. There is an agenda at work trying to paint Christianity as a religion of hate and intolerance. I am afraid the day is quickly coming when a preacher will be censored and/or arrested in his pulpit for reading scripture deemed "hate speach".

  5. Great work Elizabeth. Don't know how you keep on top of all of this. I have to respectfuly disagree with your last poster though. Even if all Christians were living like Jesus 100% of the time the world would still hate us. In fact, they would hate us even more. Pray for the salvation of the muslims. God is moving by his Spirit in the Muslim world.

  6. Joel, Point well taken. You are right, as Jesus said so Himself. We will always be hated because the world first hated Him. However I don't believe Jesus would burn a quran or protest against homosexuals for that matter. I believe He would reason with them instead. The "Christian" groups I am talking about protest at the funerals of fallen soldiers, and scream "God hates homosexuals" as a mother burries her son.
They believe they are doing the Lord's work.
We will always be hated by the wicked. But we will also be hated by the lost because we will be seen as those "hatefull Christians". If these "Christian" groups I am speaking of are truly brothers in Christ, It is our duty to confront them lovingly and correct them according to the Word. However my point was that all of these things taken together have created an environment of social instability and the "percieved" cause is radical religion.
A few laws enacted could make burning a religious book illegal. From there it is a short step to make a law that prohibits "hate speach" anywhere, even in a church, against any group or religion, which incites social unrest . This would mean that it would be illegal to witness in public as it could incite social unrest. This would also mean a preacher could be censored or arrested for reading,Romans 1,Or Leviticus 18:22,20:13 The result: The loss of our freedom of religion.
Absolutely we should pray for the salvation of the Muslims. I believe we should also pray for the salvation of some Christians.

  7. I can't really believe this but my fears have already been relized:

Elizabeth, we gotta look closer at what Obama has been doing at the UN.

  8. Hi Dale,
That was a bad resolution, for sure. It was put forth in the UN on Oct 8, 2009, about a year ago. Do you know if it passed, or was modified to any degree since then? I'd be interested...

Yes I agree Obama is sneaky. He comes at things from directions we least expect.

  9. Elizabeth, The resolution was adopted Oct 2, 2009 by the UN Human Rights Council.
This comes after a resolution proposed by Pakastan and approved by the council in March 2009. http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE52P60220090326on religious defamation.
(take note how they are concerned about free speech in Muslim countries as there is no provision like our 1st amendment.)
Elizabeth, I really think they are setting the stage for the destruction of our country from within. Most likely, we will vote it out of existance. It appears they are preparing a global, universal constitution and bill of rights. With the growing opposition against the referances to God in our founding documents and currency, it will be a small thing for people to accept the new global constitution and vote out the old. Seems absurd until you realize that this will likely happen when we have already departed.

  10. Dale, thanks for the information. It is a very, very interesting take on things. You have an excellent analysis there, and I'll ponder further. It is frustrating and grievous to so clearly see the pieces being set up and know that many will go to destruction in believing the lies...
