The disciples asked the Lord what would be the signs of the end of the age. Jesus answered in a long and explicit discourse, the longest He gave on any topic (The Sermon on the Mount in Mt 5 is about equal in length). He answered not in parables but in clear language describing a generation that would see these things come to pass. (Mt 24:33-34). One of those events are that "nation will rise against nation." To our ears in 2011, nation means country. But the Greek word here is 'ethnos'. Strong's Concordance says it means "people joined by practicing similar customs or common culture; nation(s), usually referring to unbelieving Gentiles (non-Jews). In other words, races.

“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;
wisdom and power are his.
He changes times and seasons;
he deposes kings and raises up others.
He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to the discerning.
He reveals deep and hidden things;
he knows what lies in darkness,
and light dwells with him.
