Eritrea/Ethiopia earthquakes: unusual swarm going on!

June 13: COMPLETE UPDATE HERE, with confirmation of volcanic eruption

 ------------------------------------------------------------
Six months ago, I wrote about unusual seismic activity in Ethiopia area. There were earthquakes were there aren't usually any, there was indications of a volcanic eruption, and the African rift was unzipping at the seams. That blog entry is here. Maps and pictures accompany that blog entry.

In part, I'd written:
Man's understanding is in some cases wise, and in other cases miraculous, but in other cases poor and meager. The earth is not millions of years old and plates can shift apart in a matter of days, or even in a moment. How do I know this to the point of contradicting decades of general scientific understanding? Because in the Tribulation, massive geophysical changes will occur in moments, and the world will indeed split apart quickly. "The earth is broken up, the earth is split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken." (Isaiah 24:19). "The sky receded like a scroll, rolling up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place." (Rev 6:19). Jesus controls all judgments and He will judge the earth, and He won't take millions of years to do it.

At the Horn of Africa last month, an earthquake swarm at Yemen caused alarm. The swarm was situated at the opening to the Red Sea at the Gulf of Aden, and seemed to be an unusual place for seismic activity. According to the history of the area, at USGS, the Yemen-Gulf of Aden-Djibouti area IS seismic, but in a minor way. Between 1950 through yesterday this area had 56 earthquakes ranging between mag 4.0-5.9. There were no quakes greater than mag 5.9 during that date range. Now there have been 31 (as of 1:00pm), which is 2/3 as many as in the last sixty years. This is statistically significant, as well as prophetically interesting. (Mark 13:8)

And in a third piece of interesting news from that area, not only have there been unusual geophysical changes occurring in rifts suddenly opening, and unusual earthquake activity that has never been replicated historically, but today at the other end of the rift, a 5.1 mag earthquake occurred in Ethiopia.
I urge you to read the previous entry about the ongoing, different seismic activity in that area. Today, there have been a series of moderate earthquakes again in that region, the Eritrea/Ethiopia border. These quakes are near the Nabro Volcano. Nabro never has been recorded to have erupted. It is a very large volcano. This swarm is encircling the mountain and to me appears to be volcanic in nature, but I'm no seismologist! All I know is this activity is unusual.

Comments

  1. By the time you read this, I hope you've seen that a volcano erupted in that area. Very unexpected and sudden. However, the area is so inaccessable due to politics that there are no webcams or scientists on the spot. The MSM is slow on reporting it, altho people monitoring at http://bigthink.com/ideas/38811#comments saw if from the very beginning (I was one of them - way too cool!). The area IS volcanic and has had eruptions within the past 100 years or so. Exciting times in the earthquake/volcano sphere!

  2. Hi ANonylous,

I as wondering about he volcano...I saw the satellite pictures last night between 10 and 11pm and saw the discussion in chat rooms and forums etc. I might have seen your comments and/or analysis, cool! They are saying it could be Nabro or Dubbi volcano...I was under te impression Nabro had never erupted? I am not sure about Dubbi.

I wanted to wait for confirmation on whether it was a volcanic explosion or not. Then while I was mulling that, the Chile volcano erupted again, and the eq at Christchurch happened. Interesting times for sure!

  3. The eq's at Eritrea were a volcanic eruption, the Catawba Tribune reports it here:

    http://catawbatribune.com/?p=5553

A volcano erupted in the Southern Red Sea Region of Eritrea on early Monday morning, experts said, sending an ash cloud kilometers (miles) up into the air. It is the first eruption at the volcano since 1861.

The chief forecaster at the VAAC in Toulouse said the eruption at the Dubbi volcano began at around midnight local time (2100 GMT Sunday), sending a large plume up to 13 kilometers (8 miles) high. Few details about the eruption in the remote region were immediately available.

The eruption was preceded by a series of more than a dozen light to moderate earthquakes at the volcanic complex, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). It said the two strongest earthquakes had both a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale.

  4. Wow!!! These pangs are just gettin' faster and harder!!! I no longer have a word that adequately describes watching prophecy unfold. I used "surreal" before, but now it's so much more than that. Come, Lord Jesus...

  5. Emily, I just updated this news with a blog entry confirming that it as volcanic eruption, the last time was 1861 for this volcano in Eritrea. Amazing.
