What is the big deal about Obama's change of opinion on gay marriage?

This week Obama came out and said openly that he now supports gay marriage. This caused a political earthquake in America and around the world. Some rushed in with money to support him so any potential second term may gain them political advantage of turning their deviancy into law. Some said his stance shows "moral leadership."

The pressure ramped up on other world leaders, who immediately were pressed into stating, or re-stating their views. At once, the wolves circled the Australia Prime Minister, who had to 'defend' her views against gay marriage. The UK was pressed to follow Obama's 'lead.'

In all cases though, we know that his open stance set a global precedent. And not just for gay marriage, but also for gay adoption and ultimately for redefinition of the foundational rock of our culture: families united under God.

Now we know that Obama's change in stance, or "evolution" as he calls it, is simply a crafty accession to a political timing. I mean, everyone could see this coming, and Southern Baptist Preacher and president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Al Mohler said essentially we all knew where Obama stood from the beginning and it was only a matter of time until he came out for gay marriage unequivocally.

So on that last basis, people are saying, since we all knew this was coming, what's the big deal?

Well, it IS a big deal. Franklin Graham said of Obama's shift toward public and government support of gay marriage:

"“President Obama has, in my view, shaken his fist at the same God who created and defined marriage. It grieves me that our president would now affirm same-sex marriage, though I believe it grieves God even more,” Graham said in a statement. “This is a sad day for America. May God help us,” he said.

Here is why Obama's change from a likely stance toward acceptance of gay marriage to an affirmed stance of homosexual unions codified under the force of law is a big deal: it's public sin.

Graham is right when he says America has shaken her fist at God. God does not tolerate flaunted sin. He is grieved over all sin, of course, national and individual, but to openly defy God's law regarding marriage and the family, affirming sin at the national level, takes it up a notch. God had even made a provision for a distinction between unintentional sin and defiant sin in Old Testament Law and he set rules for atonement for each:

"But if just one person sins unintentionally, he must bring a year-old female goat for a sin offering. The priest is to make atonement before the Lord for the one who erred by sinning unintentionally, and when atonement has been made for him, he will be forgiven. One and the same law applies to everyone who sins unintentionally, whether he is a native-born Israelite or an alien. But anyone who sins defiantly, whether native-born or alien, blasphemes the Lord, and that person must be cut off from his people. Because he has despised the Lord’s word and broken his commands, that person must surely be cut off; his guilt remains on him." (Numbers 15:27-31).

And no one can say that homosexual unions under government establishment and approval is an unintentional sin. Look at this verse from 2 Peter 2:6-10--

"If he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful natured and despise authority."

The authority spoken of here is God's authority, lordship authority and the celestial hierarchies.

So no one can say they were unaware that homosexuality is a sin. We were given an actual example of what is going to happen to the ungodly, and were then told that this will happen again to the ungodly because they had not heeded that example. In the case of Sodom and Gomorrah (and Admah and Zeboiim as per Deuteronomy 29:23) an entire region was destroyed due to public and flagrant sin. In the case of the US, remember that Obama is an elected representative of  the majority of 311 million people and a representative speaks for the majority of the people. So this week Obama publicly and intentionally flouted God's law for the sanctity of marriage the way He has ordained in the bible.

So you can see that it is not just a matter of one guy changing his mind about how he feels about homosexual marriage. It is a matter of a man who was elected to lead the most blessed nation on earth (after Israel) who represents and speaks for the majority of them, a king of the world, who is supposed to righteously govern according to God's standards but instead publicly flaunts God's ordinances. He has shaken his fist at God.

We consistently kill millions of unborn babies despite being told not to pass our children through the fire and sacrifice them. (Leviticus 18:21). We affirm deviancy. We allow 'no-fault' divorce. We make empty professions of faith and practice idolatry. When the gay-promoters lash out at the bible believers they call us "intolerant." They will soon discover how INTOLERANT God Himself is toward sin. Nineveh was smote for wickedness. Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim was smote for homosexuality and wickedness. Israel was punished for empty religion and flouting or abandoning God's laws. God judged the world because "the wickedness of man was great in the earth" (Genesis 6:5a). America is no different than any other nation or the world.

But let's bring our attention to a part of the verse that is a promise. The first part of the verse spoke about condemnation. The second part is a promise. Here is 2 Peter 2:6-9a:

"If he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials..."

He KNOWS how grieved we are to hear these things. He KNOWS how trapped we feel, we who did not elect him and who do not hold to these deviant standards. He KNOWS we are distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men. He KNOWS. He rescues the godly. He rescues.

Did he not rescue Noah, that righteous man, perfect in his generations? Did He not rescue Lot? Does He not promise to rescue us from the coming wrath? (1 Thessalonians 1:10). We are not appointed to wrath. (1 Thessalonians 5:9).

So? What is God waiting for? 2 Peter 3:7-9 has the answer--

"But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."

God waited for 400 years to judge the Canaanites. He waited until the fourth generation of the Amorites, until their iniquity was full. (Gen 15:16).

However at a certain point a nation does cross the line. Has America crossed it? As Franklin Graham said, Marriage "was defined not by man, but by God Himself. ... This is a sad day for America. May God help us."

  1. Hi Elizabeth, David Cameron has dropped his fight for gay marriage, due to pressure from his back benchers in The House of Parliament. Also because he got poor results from the recent local election's...what a shame...'I DON'T THINK!' I had sent seven email's (God's Number) to his email address @ number10.gov.uk, telling him that he was not God and that he had no right, to change God's Laws and put this country at the risk of God's wrath and that if he was a TRUE christain, that he should stick to what God has decreed in his bible....I expect that he never got see the emails and some office junior marked them all for junk, but it made me feel good. Well at least some good has come in the end and i just hope that he dosen't change his mind again?
    God Bless,

  2. First of all Elizabeth, Franklin Graham has followed his father into heresy, then what he say's maybe more of a front.

    2 John 1:4
I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5 And now I ask you, dear lady— not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning— that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

  3. We all knew where Obamanation stood with his continued attack on the states who voted to keep the definition of marriage, and by his continued assault on DOMA, etc. The whole thing was about money, as demonstrated by the immediate influx of money to his campaign.

This country as a whole long ago left any semblance of following God. We deserve the leadership we have.

    1. So true Glenn, we deserve what we elected. I mean, we can't even say like the Jews could back in Jesus' day that we had Rome thrust upon us! We had an option, and we took the worse one.

  4. Amen Elizabeth. I saw on Obama's website that he has a special collection of clothes, stickers, posters..etc that literally say something along the lines of "LGBT for Obama." I saw the link on drudge but can't link it from my cellphone. Its the perfect storm, the US in a growing rebellious spiritual state and a president that fits the times. Even if Obama or any other president wanted to do this 10, 20 years ago, it would have been a disaster.

I'm also noticing that another "birth pang" period seems to be developing. Interesting days ahead.

    1. I agree Debbie! 10 years ago it would have been a disaster...but now it is a disaster NOT to love homosexuality, almost! Sweet for bitter and bitter for sweet, woe to them.

I feel another labor pang starting up too. What do you see as an indicator? What is your sense of it?

  5. My heart is so heavy and burdened for our country and the church. The enemy is going to break down our stance by putting his people in our churches to try to force our hand on this issue. So many churches are embracing gay marriage. It makes me sick. LGBTQ clubs on CHRISTIAN University campuses.

They want a war on the church. They constantly ridicule and malign God's Holy Word. They say that the Bible promotes slavery, rape, polygamy--they twist and twist and twist.

A time of persecution is coming.

We will either stand for the truth of the word and be hated,
or we will bend with the culture until we break.

Is the church ready for this battle?

The church in Iran, India, China and Africa--they have been facing persecution all along.

Maybe the Lord will use this to separate the true believers from the seeker friendly, easy believism, emergent, wishy washy ones.

"They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us." 1 John 2:19

    1. My heart is burdened right there with you, Anonymous! The only thing that keeps me from total grief is thinking about how Jesus feels, His good name besmirched and seeing the black and rebellious hearts of so many. Before Noah's flood He said He was grieved He had even made man! Yet in His love He saved humanity...

And then I think of His bride, and the miracle it is that He redeems those black hearts to Himself, made spotless and new! Praise His holy Name that He redeems! The perseverance of the saints is a blessing. We can pray for those precious brethren in the persecuted nations. The time is not long now, we'll all be home, with Jesus

  6. I think we should pray for Malia and Sasha too in light of this verse. Matthew 18:6 "but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."

  8. you make life complicated when you want it to end for everyone in a fiery rage. why couldn't there be a possibility that God doesn't want us all to die. the problem with you considering that, of course, is it is difficult if not impossible to consider that you may not be right. you veil your hatred with compassion, and wish only for reward. your ways are self serving, not God serving. you depend on suffering in the world to validate the above beliefs, when you could use your energy to actively help those who suffer (you can talk all you want, but one in 7 people don't get enough food to eat. that's a problem that man can solve relatively easily, but we don't. most Americans probably don't even know that statistic). a question I would ask your God is "why create life at all if it is only something to be crushed out of existence by vengeful hands, squeezing out the souls from the inconvenience of flesh and breath... why destroy? why not inspire life to thrive, not to end. I trust not a God that is more vengeful than compassionate." I would argue that God does not let bad things happen. Maybe even God has trouble working while powerful and influential men and women drive us into a blind, manipulated state. Blind enough to kill, to cause harm to the planet and all things on it. the negative force they inspire overrides, perhaps, the intentions of any imaginable God. I contend that Man's destructive nature, though, is not a necessary evil in order to bring about a second coming or something like that will save you from it's presence, it is a real problem that needs solving by both those humans who create it, and those who live in it. please consider a compassionate God, if you can, that would like to see all things in harmony on the planet. not, say, rivers of blood, and my family and i and my friends burning forever (i guess you could call us flaming liberals though, which would be kind of funny admittedly) ,,, I have several gay friends. there are MUCH more pressing things to be angry about that may actually have major negative implications to any God you can imagine eg. Child soldiers, child molesters, oppressors, the most parasitic rich who suck on the blood of society, . I urge you to care about something that any God would be furious about, not irked. why not talk about those things?

    1. Mowgle, you make a fatal mistake in your thinking by believing Christians 'want' everyone to die in a fiery rage. First, it will happen. God is going to judge sin. That is a fact. Second, Christians are torn up about it, because the escape is so available: repent and believe on Jesus. God sent the remedy for our sins, yes OUR sins, and you and people like you refuse it. We actually cry and lament over you and people like you, because we know you're blinded by your sin and so close to the remedy but refuse to accept it. We know your fate and we mourn it.

You described "man's destructive nature" which is actually our sin nature, our predilection for evil, which God sent the solution for. The world IS suffering, because they are subject to that sin nature, which only leads to death. Jesus leads to life. God sent Jesus to be the sacrificial remedy for our suffering, and He sent the Holy Spirit to inspire the words of life in the bible so we could read it and thrive. You refuse it.

Sin is a crime against God, and because He is judge, He will judge it, He will judge you.

I agree there are many things to be upset about (not "angry") in the world. I have written about them at length here on the blog and in my weekly newsletter. You can read the archive if you are interested. Sin has caused a major corruption in the world. Homosexuality is one, Child molesters, violence, thievery, lying, all contribute to this dying world. You can escape it and accept the Holy Spirit's help in resisting sin, if you repent. THEN you will thrive.
