What is evil? You would be surprised.

Here are a few links for you. There is a theme.

This was a great analysis of Mark Driscoll's "Update Apology". The author parsed Driscoll's words and translated into plain-speak. And it isn't good.

An analysis of Mark Driscoll’s update to Mars Hill Church
Because we can do that, you know. We can analyze the words of Driscoll personally, and we can analyze the words as an articulation of Mars Hill Church’s attitudes and intentions. So we can dissect these words to discern what they are really saying to us, the abused. We can listen to what Driscoll is saying and what the church is saying. What is in their heart? Here’s what I’m hearing:
The spiritual abuse Driscoll has heaped on the sheep, and the reproach he has brought to Jesus' name, is heinous in the extreme. It's evil.

Once I wrote on Twitter and this blog that if Hitler had repented, he'd be in heaven, and that "Mother Teresa" was in hell. I got a lot of flak. But I wanted to point out two things: Jesus' work on the cross and His resulting grace covers ALL sins- except the sin of rejecting Him. Secondly, most people don't know what an evil pagan Mother Teresa was. When they think 'evil' the go-to poster boy is always Hitler and when they think 'nice' they always think Mother Teresa. But theological rejection of Christ and a lifetime of working against Him is evil. Let's call it what it is. Here is one author who does.

Here's What We Learned From Mother Teresa and Why We Should Reject It

Speaking of calling evil, evil, here is Denny Burk on that very topic. Let's not get so inoculated with the times that we forget what evil is- opposing Christ in any form. Here, Burk uses ISIS terrorists as the example. In his essay at the top is a photo of a black hooded ISIS terrorist holding a knife. My point is that the ones who terrotize in Allahs' name are not the only evil ones. The smiling pseudo Christians are actually worse.

Refusing to call evil “evil”

This next essay is about apathetic Christians who have emerged from a generation of decisional acceptance of Christ and the prevalent lazy attitude toward obeying Him. We are reaping the 'rewards' of a generation as this author says, of "Millions upon millions of content and confident, flesh-obsessed walking dead who think like the world, act like the world, love what the world loves and hate what the world hates…all in Jesus’ name."

The (church built) Zombie Apocalypse is upon us…

If you haven't caught on to the theme of this essay with links, it is evil, but not Hitler evil. Not ISIS evil. It's pseudo-Christian evil, in my opinion, the worst kind. I expect terrorists like ISIS to be ferocious, bloody knife wielding lawbreakers. But the true Christian world forgets that a Beth Moore, a Mother Teresa, a Mark Driscoll, a sin-avoiding preaching pastor, a lazy pseudo-Christian, are also terrorists. They're terrorists, lawbreakers, spies, and destroyers.

Do you think one of these images is worse than another? You're right, it's Beth Moore who is the more evil.

An ISIS terrorist's gun kills the body. Moore's weapon, the bible, (the way she uses it), kills the soul. (Matthew 10:28)

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.  (Matthew 23:15)

For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:4)

James Robison and wife Betty.
Their program on Wednesdays features Beth Moore

This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. (Galatians 2:4)

Just because we can see that ISIS terrorists are maniacal, foaming at the mouth unthinking dogs doesn't make them more evil than a Beth Moore or a James Robison. It actually makes them less evil, because they are easy to spot. The true terrorists of earth are the ones who creep in to church in order to destroy the name of Christ and hinder the witness of the sheep.

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves. (2 Peter 2:1)

One of the faces of today's evil

Jesus knows we find it hard to bear the evil done in His name. He understands the teeth-grinding righteous grief we feel when we see what is done in His name by those calling themselves His children-

‘I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance, and how you cannot bear with those who are evil, but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not, and found them to be false. (Revelation 2:2)

A preacher like Mark Driscoll is actually more dangerous than an ISIS terrorist. Same with Beth Moore, Joyce Meyer, Joel Osteen, Kenneth Copeland, James Robison, Mother Teresa, Pope Francis...They have one thing in common, they are all part of satan's system and are his trophies of evil.

Let's call it what it is.

  1. Re: Driscoll - Thank you for speaking plainly, Elizabeth. The analysis at nakedpastor was spot on.

Brannon Howse and Jesse Johnson did a fantastic job addressing this issue on WVW on 8/26. Additionally, Johnson posted two good articles about the situation at the Cripplegate (Driscoll Drama by Johnson, and Please Tell Me So by Eric Davis).

Speaking of WVW, I also watched the broadcast with Justin Peters about Moore. I watched the clip where she rails on her detractors, calling them "scoffers". Yikes. So glad I never participated in any of her studies. Thank you Lord!

  2. Be careful, while I agree with you in principle, it can borderline Christian slander. Matthew 18 tells us if we have anything against a brother or sister, tell it to them personally, then with 2 or 3 witnesses, then if they do not hear tell it to the church. May I say, if you have not confronted these named teachers personally, you really should not accuse them in front of the church (on the web).
Remember the warning of Matthew 24:48-50New King James Version (NKJV)

48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’[a] 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of,

Again, I am not saying I disagree with what you are saying, just stating that breaking the unity of the church also gives the enemy an occasion to slander the cause of Christ- this is why I believe The Lord gave us the warning in Matthew 24 and the order of exposing false teachers and other sinners within the church found in Matthew 18

    1. It is not slander when we mark those causing divisions by promoting a doctrine of demons. In those cases, no "unity" exists. My entire point was that there are those inside the faith who are not of the faith but pretend to be so. We are not to partner with them or have any dealings with them. It is not slander to call them out, it is a command so as to preserve the doctrine and protect the sheep. That's why I said above after prayer and evidence. When you have evidence, it's not slander. it's fact.

Sometimes I think people who trot out Matthew 18 care more for the false teacher's feelings than the sheep or even Jesus' name.

However, Anonymous, this is not a Matthew 18 situation. They way you want to use Matthew 18 (the church discipline passages) it would actually protect false teachers. It is not the correct scripture to employ in this case. I shared many up above that *are* the correct scriptures to employ when coming up against a false teacher.

Here are a few links to help you understand when to use Matthew 18 and when to use the other scriptures I've provided in this essay.

Please realize when a verifiable false teacher is bringing destruction onto himself and the sheep, and reproach onto Jesus' name, it is not appropriate to care more for his reputation than it is to care for Jesus' ("Christian slander"). In the case of false teachers, they are slandering our Savior, and it is our job to see that "their mouths are stopped." (Titus 1:11)

    2. Thanks for these links Elizabeth, esp Mike Abendroth's short message which explains fully why good shepherds like John MacArthur live their Christian life as he preaches it as well as having all his sermons online, not hiding any of them.

  3. I'm so happy you're not candid, Elizabeth (said sarcastically, of course). Telling the truth and warning folk can only benefit them; okay, once their wounded prides are out of the picture. Satan does, indeed, masquerade as an angel of "light" and his helpers (mentioned in your article) masquerade as servants of righteousness.
I like this piece. A lot. Well done, sister.

  4. Hi Elizabeth, I was the Matthew 18 anonymous- please don't think I am condemning you or this piece, but the point I was getting at is how can we properly judge another one's servant?

Lets just take one for example, Mother Teresa. We are instructed that we may judge the fruit of an individual, thier works, by thier fruits you shall know them- but we certainly cannot judge the root (the heart) which lies deep beneath the soil, this is only for God alone to judge Who can see the heart.

So from which of Mother Teresa's works do you judge her evil?
It appears instead you are trying to judge her heart relationship with Jesus, which you cannot know, based upon her affiliation with the organization called the Roman Catholic Church.

This does not grant a basis to judge someone's relationship or standing with God- although I bet we agree that the RCC is the mother of harlots the Bible speaks of, she also has many daughters that a lot of the flock attend every Sunday without even knowing. So if you are judging Mother Teresa based upon the RCC, you are casting a broad net indeed. If this is not the cause, then again, which of her works qualifies her for such slander? Since we obviously cannot know her heart we must judge soley on her words or works.

    1. you're splitting hairs and making it unnecessarily complicated. As *you* said, we judge her words. Mother Teresa rejected the Gospel many times. She preached a different Gospel. She was not saved. I "judge" that negatively, as does Jesus.

    2. Glad to see you stand your ground Elizabeth. II Timothy is a good point of reference for those who oppose naming names. It is vital to the health of the Body of Christ that false teachers are named. II Corinthians 11 and I Corinthians 11 are also applicable for the reasons we are to expose these heretics.
Keep looking up...it can't be much longer Saints!!!

    3. "Mother" Teresa has nothing to do with Jesus Christ, God, or the Holy Spirit. She was not a sister in the faith; she was a media hype, created by liberals for their own silly agenda.

Elizabeth, I'm behind you all the way.

    4. Anonymous,

When teachers are public, then the rebuke of them has to be public. The exposure of them has to be public. Otherwise the public who is being led astray by them won't know that they are false teachers.

  5. An add on thought... an observation. I've noticed that many believers love to incorrectly trot out Matthew 18 when it comes to how the church is to handle the sins and doctrinal errors of a very public teacher.

Yet the Scripture that applies is 1 Tim 5:20, of course after the conditions in vs 19 has been addressed.

In the case of most of these public teachers, the conditions of verse 19 have been more than amply established.

  6. I have a question for you on another matter. My church is beginning four new studies. They are Jen Wilkin's, the sermon on the mount, Johnny Hunt's The deacon I want to be, Max Anders 30 days to understanding the bible, and of course the latest Beth Moore study. Can you advise on these ? Not Beth Moore's I already know that she is heretical.

    1. Hi Rebecca, I'm not familiar with the titles you mentioned, though I am familiar with Johnny Hunt.

As for Max Anders, I turned to Tim Challies. He is a Christian book reviewer, as well as a pastor and author himself. He can be trusted to make discerning reviews. He wrote a book on spiritual discernment, after all, lol.

He didn't review the Anders book but did give it a positive mention, saying the Anders book was "an excellent title" from a good publisher. The link is here if you want to read the remark in context. http://www.challies.com/articles/the-next-story-introducing-the-team-agent

I have no review or discernment on Hunt's Deacon book. I haven't heard about it nor have I read it...sorry. :(

Jen Wilkin, her book Women of the Word, Challies gave an extremely positive review. http://www.challies.com/writings/book-reviews/authors/jen-wilkin
He also positively recommended her book Guarding Sabbath for Children. So perhaps we can extend that hopeful positivity to the Sermon on the Mount book your church will take up... she seems to be a good author so I'm glad you asked the question because Women of the Word looks like a good alternative to Beth Moore if it should come up at my church.

      Hope this helps a bit.

  7. There's a video on youtube showing Dahmer's confession. And guess what got him to a knowledge of sin and salvation? Creation evangelism materials his father gave him that came from ICR (I believe).

Fascinating. But the man repented, as far as we can tell, and the full length interview is out there somewhere.
