Another Haboob/Arizona dust storm: 6th this year

A few days ago there was a monster dust storm in Arizona. Every time this happens, people post photos and remark on the apocalyptic-looking nature of the storm. The are impressive to be sure.

So I got curious as to how normal or abnormal these storms are. I wrote about it here, and offered the reader quantifiable data with links. The result of my inquiry was that these dust storms are normal. The geographic layout of the area relative to the jet stream and temps on the ground produce them as a normal course of summer storm- to a limit.

What else I discovered was that the haboobs as they are known in Arabic are that they usually produce little damage, last a short time, don't reach incredible heights of altitude, and are numbered in the average range of two to three per season. I repeat, the usual number of them in a summer season (June-Sept) is 2 to 3.

2012 has already produced six. May 9, June 26, June 27, and July 21, July 23, and July 30

In addition, the first storm fell outside the average season (May), several of them have produced lots of damage, and one reached altitudes that are not usual for these storms. That, my friends, is NOT normal.

So when you read about yet another dust storm in Arizona and you hear the meteorologists saying "Aw, nothing to see here, they're normal,' now you have the rest of the secular story.

What is the spiritual story? God uses drought when a people have turned their backs on Him. Plain and simple. Let's look at the bible.

"When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:13-14).

God is telling us a few things here. First, He controls the heavens and allows or disallows rain. Second, When God shuts up heaven and prevents rain it is because they have turned their faces away from Him. Third, He makes a promise, if they repent and turn their faces toward Him, He will re-open heaven. What a blessing! God is holy- He hates sin. God is kind, He is warning us (the US, and other places with drought, like Australia).

People will say that we cannot make a correlation between a dust storm in Arizona and the fact that God is unhappy with an entire nation of people. If it was one storm, once, you would be right. However the body of evidence tells us something different when comparing with the bible. By this stage of the Church Age, looking at the numbers of storms, the other locations experiencing the droughts and storms, the Chick-fil-A flap, the demonic symbolism at the opening of the Olympics, the refusal to state that Jerusalem is the Capital of Israel, the rising anti-semitism, violence, and homosexuality, plus the totality of blasphemy against God in this world, we can most definitely say, it is GOD. How can a person say it is not God?

Will we heed the warnings? REPENT!

  2. I live in Phoenix and dust storms and high winds happens quit often during the summer monsoons. But I sure have not seen the intensity of the dust storms like as of late. The worst place for dust storms is in between Phoenix and Tucson where sometimes the dust is so thick people driving cannot see the road right in front of you. You see break lights/tail lights of cars in front of you, but do not know if they are still driving or have pulled off the road. These storms happen every year. Here in Phoenix I have not seen the high wall of dust like this year and last year. As far as wind, every summer we do get intense wind storms strong enough to blow over trees. I have not noticed wind storms being stronger than normal.

    1. Hi Ken,

Thanks for the eyewitness report. It's always nice to know someone who is there who can offer relevant info!

I was reporting based on what I read from meteorologists and put on the previous blog entry about haboobs. Regarding the severity and unusualness of the storms, and their average number in a season. There was a storm in the 2011 season that caused a severe amount of damage the weather men are still talking about.

As for frequency, the storms do happen each year, that was the premise I went forward on, to determine whether they are usual or unusual. In the previous blog entry I reported that they are perfectly usual! It is the number of them that got my attention. This season has already doubled the average amount of expected storms, at and we're only halfway thru the season. The links are at the previous blog essay I'd linked to.

As for the damage, I went by headlines I skimmed over a period of time, but that of course is an anecdotal, snapshot view since I can't read ALL of them and then make an assessment. That's where your eyewitness report comes in as valuable.

Stay safe, Ken. It looks like according to the trend that there will be more dust storms before September is over.

    1. Thanks anonymous! I always find these haboob videos fascinating to look at. I'm not an excitement junkie, so I think it's because I really see the power of God in them as the massive storms swallow up us puny humans and our ant-like endeavors.

    1. Hi Anonymous,

Someone emailed me last night asking about that. I think Satan's symbolism is a good subject, worth revisiting. I wrote about it once a couple of years ago but only in the framework of the EU. I'll widen the concept and do a blog about it in the upcoming day or two. I am also working on an essay for the Language of God series: drought. Thanks for the prompt!!

  6. I lived in Arizona, from Jan 2006 to Nov 2007 and I know there weren't that many dust storms, in fact, I only recall there being one, perhaps 2, and they weren't that bad. They were not like these monster ones I have seen in photos and videos.

I believe you are right, that they are part of God's warning. Sadly, so many don't see it that way. I have come across people, including other so called Christians, whom when you even attempt to talk to them about these things, and say anything about it being a warning, to repent, to get their spiritual house in order, they immediately shut down their mind to you, look at you like you're insane, and rebut you, and shut you down, laughing at you even.

Honestly, I truly believe some people are just so in lust with their sins, which they don't even see as being sins, that their hearts have truly been hardened, and I don't believe they are reachable anymore. I liken them to Pharaoh, of Moses time. Despite Pharaoh clearly knowing there was not just a God, but that the God of Moses and the Jewish people, was THE real God, as evidence by all the divine demonstrations, he still refused to concede, to confess the error of his ways, confess that their God was THE God, and repent, and set the Jewish people free. Did God still provide a way out for him? Not that I can find in my bible.

I am amazed at this carnal Christian doctrine (not that you are speaking of it, just that I am aware of it) that has so many people thinking "we all sin, we can't help it, so don't tell me I'm not a Christian", combined with "I believe in Jesus, therefore, I'm saved, and my salvation is eternal, I'm getting out of hell, so I don't have to worry". They seem to think they can keep living life how they want, keep sinning willfully, without compunction, and then just say a pray like a ritual, simply saying they're sorry, please forgive me Lord, without their being any true remorse, nor true repentance, and no strides in righteousness, meaning sinning less and less, and ceasing certain sins altogether.

It's so clear the time of God's wrath is closer than it's ever been, and each days brings us closer still. Yet multitudes, no matter the warnings from us watchers, refuse to heed the warnings, and truly turn to God, and repent. As it says in the bible, "It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God." Hebrews 10:31.

    1. Yes, really. Why not? God made the earth. Not a sparrow falls withougt Him declaring it should happen. He knows the number of hairs on your head and the names of all the stars in the universe. All that occurs, from rain to no rain, earthquakes to peaceful seas, from snowstorms to dust storms, Is God. He either causes or allows every single thing to happen. I'm glad you're amused, but you will stand before His throne someday and make an account of yourself, including how you mocked Him. Are you ready?

  8. If these are dust storms are god's comments on society, what does it say that he is making it known in Arizona.
