UPDATED. A Faded Piece of Papyrus Refers to Jesus’ Wife

UPDATE: a good article from Thomas White, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's vice president of student services and communications, titled, "What pastors need to know about the Jesus wife fragment". He says essentially what I reported here. But better.
 -------------------------
LOL, the Gnostics are at it again, this time from Harvard Divinity School. News just in, a "new" fragment purporting to have the real information on Jesus is said to contain a writing referring to Jesus' wife and a female disciple.

The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife
"The faded papyrus fragment is smaller than a business card, with eight lines on one side, in black ink legible under a magnifying glass. Just below the line about Jesus having a wife, the papyrus includes a second provocative clause that purportedly says, “she will be able to be my disciple."

"Much of the context, therefore, is missing. But Dr. King was struck by phrases in the fragment like “My mother gave to me life,” and “Mary is worthy of it,” which resemble snippets from the Gospels of Thomas and Mary. Experts believe those were written in the late second century and translated into Coptic."

"The provenance of the papyrus fragment is a mystery, and its owner has asked to remain anonymous."

Provenance means origin and the owner is secret. Well.

Yet many will take this fragment and run with it. They will be doing something akin to this medical metaphor: "Expert doctor says "I have a drug. I can't tell you where it comes from and I can't tell you where it was developed and I can't tell you what's in it. But if you take it, you will be healed."

Would you eat it? Not on your life! But that is the fragmentary information liberal, mystical, gnostic Christians will cling to, as a validation that feminism was right all along, and that the Gospels that the Holy Spirit inspired are incomplete. Hath God said...?

The article goes on to make the spurious statement that the fragment will re-ignite the second century controversy 'on whether Jesus was married, caught up with a debate about whether Christians should marry and have sex.'

I guess those "Christians" never read 1 Corinthians 7.

Michael Lawrence on Harvard Divinity, from 9Marks:
How to become a liberal without going to Harvard Divinity School
"The liberal theology of Harvard Divinity traded the knowledge of God for the knowledge of man. God’s revelation in Jesus Christ ceased to be the measure of truth, and in its place was substituted a lesser measure, one of our own devising. ... May God protect us from such a mindset, and instead give us the mind of Christ, who laid down his life for the sheep, but not to their judgment. Instead, like the Good Shepherd, let us entrust ourselves “to Him who judges justly,” and from him “receive the crown of glory that will never fade away” (1 Pet. 2:23, 5:4)."

  1. I'm in no way surprised and would expect to see these sort of things ramping up. With people willfully looking to discredit the Gospel and Jesus' divinity, they're going to be begging for answers like this.

Eventually it will hit the big screen in very blasphemous ways.

  2. Why are all of you right wing religious nut jobs afraid of the truth? Jesus loved all, felt everyone is equal! that there is no difference between sinner, faithful, man, woman, prostitute, judas... except for the willingness to admit when someone was wrong! Do you all think he'd be happy that millions have die in his name in multiple wars, whether it be based on money, land, or ideology? no he'd be appalled... I have faith that him and St. Peter will look at all of you and judge you properly, hence it's their right to do so, not ours! So I keep going, believing in karma, that everyone has the right to be happy, loved and free! and I know when I get to those gates I will have to atone for my own sins, as everyone should and know that I hopefully brought enough laughter, love and some tolerance to those I have met. I was always registered as an Independent to vote out incumbents(voting for either republicans and democrats) until the bush years and I realize that only the left had realistic views on the world! oh and the Gnostics were right and the Cathars... but guess who killed them, disgraced them and shunned them.. "Holy" Roman Catholic church! and almost every denomination is based off them! so really they need to be brought up on crimes against humanity!

    1. Hello True Believer,

Yes, I am a religious nut job. I actually believe the bible. Crazy, I know.

As for the comment on wars, did you know that according to the Encylopedia of Wars, that of the 1,763 wars that have been waged over the course of human history only 123 were religious in nature, an astonishingly low 6.98%? It is a myth that war is caused by religion.

Additionally, saying that He would be appalled at war shows me you do not know Jesus, aside from the fact that you seem to have an inside track on His mind, outside of the bible. In Revelation 19:15 Jesus, declares, "Out of His mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron scepter. He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty."

Here is an important tip: you wrote "when I get to those gates I will have to atone for my own sins,". I have it on good authority that you should atone BEFORE you get to the gates. After, it will be too late. (Hebrews 9:27).

    2. 5 Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll
      and to open its seals,
for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

14 And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” and the elders fell down and worshiped.

It is Jesus who will judge not Peter.

      Romans 3
      God's Righteousness Upheld

3 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? 2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God. 3 What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4 By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written,

“That you may be justified in your words,
and prevail when you are judged.”

5 But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.) 6 By no means! For then how could God judge the world? 7 But if through my lie God's truth abounds to his glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? 8 And why not do evil that good may come?—as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just.
