I don't know why, but this post really caught my attention. I've never lived on a ship (and haven't really even been on many boats), but your description here of the dawn watch is so vivid. Especially how it's the darkest of darkness, then it is suddenly pierced by the dawn.
Especially encouraging is your reminder to have the courage to reach to someone in the darkness, to help them into the light. This includes believers helping each other in times of great difficulty. No greater love has a man, than he that would lay down his life for his friends.
